Flexible Seating

I was pretty reluctant to embrace flexible seating at first. A little too much choice in my classroom made me nervous. But I can say after some trial and error I have found a way that suits me.
Here’s how things work in my classroom:
All flexible seating has a home base for students to select.
Selection of work space is made on Mondays for the week.
Items like bean bags, surfer desks, stools, wobbles, rocking chairs, and various cushions are used and traded in and out through the day (depending on activity needs)
I may assign work space if/when needed for students that either need redirection or unique needs.
After implementing it for about a month, I learned that the novelty wears off and sitting by friends isn’t always wise. Students will find a groove and select things that do help them focus.
Classmates are more eager to work together when it’s less structured. Collaboration became more natural when everyone is more comfortable with the workspace.
I definitely recommend implementation of flexible seating. If you get a chance, try a few pieces at a time and find what works for you.
